We have all unplugged an electronic device or rebooted our computers when some sort of malfunction occurs. But what do we do when we need to reset our minds and bodies? If you are human, there is no doubt the stressors of life sometimes steal your thunder. But in truth, stress can do a lot more than that. Most illnesses are linked to or exacerbated by stress. The flood of chemicals released by our bodies when we experience stress interfere with proper digestion, increase inflammation, compromise the immune system, accelerate the aging process and can cause anxiety, depression and insomnia.
Although we may not find ourselves running from a bear in day to day life, many of us are
triggered into the “fight or flight” response due to stress. This is the work of our sympathetic nervous system. It is designed to get us out of a dangerous situation by releasing adrenaline and other stress hormones into our system. This essentially puts all the restorative systems of our body on hold to help us “run away from the bear”. It makes sense. If a bear was chasing you, getting away fast would certainly be more important than digesting breakfast or fighting a little cold. And so the blood supply to our organs is decreased and there is an increase in blood flow to arms and legs to give us the energy to escape. The problem is if we spend too much time in this state, our bodies and minds will pay a price.
Conversely, when we are relaxed our parasympathetic nervous system switches on. This
stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals make us feel good. Endorphins are natural pain killers and serotonin is a natural mood elevator. In this state our organs are supported and nourished allowing the maintenance systems of the body to function optimally. We feel better, sleep better and often even look better.
