It's Peel Season! A Guide to Exfoliation

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Are you ready for better skin? At Ocean Spa, we have a team of knowledgeable licensed estheticians who want you to look in the mirror and love the healthy, glowing skin you see! The not-so-secret answer to achieving radiant, hydrated and clear skin is simple - exfoliation!

There are two types of exfoliation: chemical and physical. Each plays an important role in getting and maintaining your best skin but it’s important to know when and which methods are best for you and your skin. You don’t need to (and don’t have to) figure this part out on your own. We’re here to help you with that, but understanding the differences are helpful if you are serious about the overall health of your skin.

Chemical exfoliation. Don’t be afraid of the word “acid” or “chemical peel”. They may sound intimidating, but our peels are gentle and effective without the Samantha Jones in “Sex and the City” chemical burn look. (Side note: If, like me, you’re old enough to have watched Sex and the City when it originally aired, you need these anti-aging facials!) Chemical peel solutions “eat away” and dissolve dead skin cells, unclog pores, fight signs of aging and help reveal clear, smooth, and evenly pigmented skin comfortably and with no down time.

Physical exfoliation. One form of physical exfoliation is microdermabrasion. It's been around forever and for good reason - it works well! It has consistently been a spa favorite for a deeper physical exfoliation. This treatment incorporates the use of a diamond-tip tool (it feels a little like a fine-grit sandpaper) to “rough up” and eliminate dead skin, improve texture, and reduce acne and acne scarring. The immediate results are softer, smoother and brighter skin.

Which is better? Both types of exfoliation are great for improving the appearance of your skin but everyone’s skin is different. Our estheticians can help you decide which is best for you and as your skin acclimates, you may be able to increase the frequency of your treatments, or alternate peels with microdermabrasion for even faster and greater results.

Commit to better skin. Because exfoliation (whether chemical, physical or a

combination of both), is not “one-size-fits-all" we’re offering the flexibility to use them however you and your esthetician decide is best. Whether you purchase a series of four chemical peels or four microdermabrasion facials, we’ve priced them both at $520 for 4 so they are completely interchangeable. Use two for peels, two for microdermabrasion or use all four for chemical peels - you and your esthetician will come up with a treatment plan that is best for you!
